01 · EnvironmentMoisture, light, and deliberately limited airflow.
A dart-frog vivarium is usually planted to stay humid, but “humid” is not the same as stagnant or waterlogged. Mist to support the plants, leaf litter, and the species you keep; then watch what dries, where water collects, and how the frogs use the space. The goal is an enclosure with damp microhabitats and healthy growth, not saturated substrate everywhere or a permanently fogged-up box.
Many planted vivariums intentionally use limited ventilation to retain moisture. That makes regular observation more important: fresh air should still exchange, glass should not stay obscured without a break, and leaf litter, wood, and soil should not develop a persistent sour smell or unexplained mold bloom. Adjust one variable at a time and allow the enclosure to show you the result.
Give plants and frogs a consistent light cycle with an appropriate fixture and timer. Let plant response, frog behavior, and heat produced by the fixture guide fine adjustments; do not copy another keeper’s duration, height, or temperature as a universal prescription.

02 · Feeding & observationFeed with your eyes open.
Offer suitable, live prey in a way that lets you see whether each animal is interested and able to feed. Feeding is also a daily health check: notice where frogs wait, whether they approach food, whether prey is escaping into inaccessible places, and whether a timid animal is being outcompeted.
Use a species-appropriate supplementation plan from dependable husbandry and veterinary sources. Keep the supplement dry, use only the amount needed to lightly coat the feeder insects, and refresh it according to its label. The right prey size, frequency, and supplementation routine depends on the frogs, not a fixed rule that works for every dart frog.
Keep simple notes and occasional photos. “Ate normally after misting” or “stayed hidden during lights-on” becomes useful only when it can be compared with prior days, maintenance, room changes, and the enclosure’s condition.
03 · Cleanup crewCare for the animals beneath the leaf litter.
Springtails and isopods are living parts of the vivarium, not a set-and-forget cleaning tool. They help process small amounts of organic material and contribute to a functioning leaf-litter layer, but they cannot compensate for overfeeding, spoiled food, poor drainage, or neglected maintenance.
Maintain a varied, moist-but-not-flooded litter and substrate layer with places for them to shelter. Check under a removable piece of leaf litter or cork occasionally: a healthy crew is usually something you can find, not something you need to see everywhere. Replace or add leaf litter as it breaks down, and use spare cultures to replenish the enclosure if the population thins.
Choose species appropriate for the enclosure and its inhabitants. Remove uneaten food and any decaying material that is building up faster than the crew can handle it.
04 · Flightless fruit-fly culturesKeep the feeder supply ahead of the frogs.
Maintain more than one culture at different stages so a slow culture does not become an urgent feeding problem. Label each one with the fly type and start date, then make fresh cultures on a repeatable rotation rather than waiting for the last container to fade.
Start with clean containers, appropriate prepared medium, a dry climbing surface, and a modest number of healthy starter flies. Keep cultures where their conditions are stable and away from direct sun, drafts, and the vivarium’s heat. Check them routinely for activity, excess condensation, drying medium, mites, or off smells; isolate and discard failing cultures rather than trying to feed through contamination.
When harvesting, tap only the number of flies you plan to offer into a clean cup, lightly supplement as appropriate, and return the culture promptly. Keeping tools clean and culture work separate from enclosure maintenance makes accidental pests and spills much easier to control.
A simple culture pipeline
- Starting: newly made and labeled.
- Producing: active culture used for feeding.
- Backup: separate healthy culture kept out of the immediate rotation.
- Retiring: isolated/discarded when mites, odor, or collapse appear.
05 · Routine & observationDescribe first. Interpret second.
Build a short routine around water, misting, lights, glass, plant growth, leaf litter, feeder cultures, and the frogs themselves. Small, repeatable checks are more useful than a frantic response to a single unusual moment.
Write down what changed before deciding why: activity, appetite, posture, skin appearance, waste, water level, equipment, room conditions, and recent maintenance. A dated photo can reveal a gradual change that memory misses. When something feels wrong, protect the animal first and seek qualified help rather than experimenting with broad changes all at once.
